Bidding & Auto-bid

Bidding & Auto-bid.

4 questions in this section.

For reserve auctions, time extension applies when a bidder places a valid bid in the last 10 minutes before a lot is due to close. When that happens, the clock resets so 10 minutes remain again. Each further qualifying bid in that final window extends it again; there is no cap on the number of extensions. Closed tenders are exempt from time extension.

The extension should be treated as a very last chance. Use it to place the maximum bid you are willing to pay, or use the auto-bid function. Auto-bids placed earlier take priority over normal bids if they are equal.

Please do not try to game the system. Bidding becomes frantic in the last minutes of an auction, so timeous bidding is always the safer approach.

Placing an auto-bid online means the platform will automatically bid on your behalf up to your maximum bid using the pre-determined bidding increments. This can begin as soon as an auction is published and bidding opens.

If you are winning the lot and are later outbid, you will receive an email notification. If two bidders leave the same auto-bid and that bid wins the lot, the bidder who left the bid first will be the winner.

The earliest auto-bid takes priority when it is equal to a normal bid or equal to another auto-bid placed later.

Placing a bid before the close of an auction does not automatically mean you have won the lot. You can still be outbid if you do not monitor the auction. Using the auto-bid function allows the system to keep bidding on your behalf up to your maximum auto-bid amount.

An online auction remains loaded and accessible until the closing date and time stipulated, taking the time extension rules into account. Please also note that load shedding and broadband connectivity issues on your own device can affect your ability to stay connected in the last minutes of bidding.

End of auction statuses:

  • Open for offers: No bids were placed on the lot and buyers can make offers to the seller for consideration.
  • Pending: The current bid is below reserve and must be negotiated.
  • Vendu: The lot is sold and will be invoiced.

NB: Place bids timeously. Do not wait until the last minute or seconds in case of system delays or network connectivity issues.

STC stands for subject to confirmation. Those auctions move into review after close, and the Vendu Cape team records the final decision before marking them STC, open for offers, or vendu.

Connectivity & Payments

Connectivity & Payments.

2 questions in this section.

We understand that load shedding and power outages can unexpectedly impact cell phone signals and fibre connections, leading to technical issues while you are participating in our online auctions.

If this happens, contact our support team immediately. Do not wait until after the auction has concluded. The sooner we know, the quicker we can assist you.

When contacting us, provide as much detail as possible about the issue, including the time it occurred, any error messages received, and how it affected your ability to bid.

It is at the auctioneer's discretion to add additional time to the auction, up to 10 minutes, to accommodate buyers impacted by load shedding or related connectivity issues. This is intended to ensure all interested participants have a fair chance to place their bids.

We are committed to making the platform as accessible and fair as possible, even when external power or network disruptions occur.

At Vendu Cape Auctioneers, we aim to ensure a smooth and secure payment process for all clients. Payments must be made directly into our trust account.

Preferred payment methods:

  • Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT): Recommended for secure and efficient payment directly into our trust account.
  • Wire transfer: Accepted for clients who prefer or require this option, especially from international banks.

Cash payments: If possible, deposit cash into your own bank account first and then transfer the funds to us by EFT. This improves security and simplifies the transaction process.

If cash is deposited directly into our trust account, a 2% administrative fee will apply to offset the bank charges associated with direct cash deposits. Please also note that cash paid directly into a trust account can create FIC administrative burdens and client risk analysis requirements.

We do not accept cash payments on site or through third-party services for auction transactions. For clarification, see the FIC guidance on cash transactions.
